Yadin, Yigael
(1917-84)
   Israeli archaeologist and soldier. He was born in Jerusalem. He became a member of the Haganah and served in various official positions: he was chief of operations during the Israeli War of Independence, and chief of staff of the Israeli army from 1949 to 1952. He then taught archaeology at the Hebrew University, where he became professor. He published studies of the Dead Sea Scrolls and directed excavations at Hazor and Masada.
